If home skin products aren't proving effective but you aren't ready for surgery, learn more about nonsurgical procedures for skin rejuvenation like microneedling with SkinPen® technology. Dr. Michael Klingerman is happy to offer microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) at his offices in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, PA. SkinPen microneedling works by creating controlled micro-injuries in the skin using fine needles, which stimulates the body's natural healing process. This process boosts collagen and elastin production, resulting in smoother, firmer, and more youthful-looking skin. Easily performed with other skin treatments, like vitamin serums or platelet-rich fibrin (PRF), microneedling can help minimize pores, scars, and stretch marks. Schedule a consultation at Nabi Medical Aesthetics to learn more about the results of microneedling and how to personalize the treatment for your skin concerns and goals.

At Nabi Medical Aesthetics, we encourage microneedling for those who would like a variety of advantages:

  • Minimization of scars, uneven pigmentation, or stretch marks
  • Balanced texture and tone of skin
  • Diminished aesthetic of wrinkles, fine lines, and signs of aging
  • Low-risk, noninvasive treatment option

Microneedling is done in one of our office procedure rooms in about 30 – 60 minutes with numbing cream or a local anesthesia if desired; however, most patients experience mild or no pain and discomfort. The skin being treated will be cleaned before the SkinPen handpiece is passed evenly over. After the microneedling is performed, a treatment such as a vitamin-infused serum may be applied for deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin. A moisturizer will be massaged in along with sun protection since your skin will be more sensitive following the procedure.

After microneedling, you might notice some redness and swelling, similar to a mild sunburn, for 24-48 hours. Your skin may also feel a bit tight or sensitive. It's crucial to avoid direct sun exposure and apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen consistently. We recommend using gentle, hydrating cleansers and moisturizers, and refraining from harsh exfoliants. Most patients can resume their normal activities shortly after the procedure, with full recovery typically within a week. For optimal results, a series of 3-6 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart is often recommended. Dr. Klingerman will discuss a personalized aftercare plan to maximize your results and ensure a smooth recovery.

You may be a good candidate for microneedling if you’re dealing with mild skin concerns like reduced elasticity, rough texture, or early signs of aging. This treatment, also known as collagen induction therapy, helps improve skin health by minimizing the appearance of enlarged pores, acne scars, and even stretch marks. While results aren’t immediate, they gradually develop as your body boosts collagen and elastin production, typically taking a month or more. With a bit of patience, you can enjoy naturally refreshed skin and a noticeable improvement in texture and tone.

Is microneedling safe for all skin types and tones?

Yes, microneedling is considered safe for all skin types and tones. Unlike some laser treatments, microneedling does not use heat, which minimizes the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) in darker skin tones. However, individuals with certain skin conditions like active acne, eczema, or rosacea may need to wait until their condition is under control before receiving treatment. A consultation with your provider can help determine the safest approach for your skin.

How does microneedling with SkinPen differ from traditional microneedling?

SkinPen is an FDA-cleared microneedling device that ensures more consistent results and safety due to its precise needle depth and advanced design. While traditional microneedling devices vary in quality and reliability, SkinPen offers a sterile, single-use needle system that reduces the risk of infection. It is also suitable for use on more delicate areas like around the eyes and mouth, where traditional devices may not be as effective or safe.

Is microneedling with SkinPen painful?

Microneedling with SkinPen is generally well-tolerated, but some patients may experience mild discomfort during the procedure. A topical numbing cream is usually applied to minimize any pain or discomfort. The sensation is often described as a slight tingling or pricking, and any discomfort usually subsides quickly after the treatment. The level of discomfort can also depend on the treatment area and individual pain tolerance.
